patients the option of undergoing radiation therapy without the same risks that other types have. This new technology allows radiation treatment that is more precise and has fewer risks. Yet,
as with any new treatment, there are risks and dangers and things that some technicians or physicians might overlook. Also, staff needs to be trained to use the equipment
properly and in assessing IMRT, one can see that there is an impact on radiation therapists. First, before assessing the impact to the therapists themselves, what is IMRT exactly?
Intensity modulated radiation therapy has been looked at as an alternative treatment for certain types of tumors (Barker, 1998). Other options like
craniotomy and gamma knife radiosurgery have been set aside as these require that the patient stay in the hospital (1998). At the same time, with IMRT, the patient does not
have to be hospitalized and the process can be utilized to treat tumors in most parts of the body inclusive of those in the chest, esophagus and prostate (1998). It
is different from conventional therapy in that the amount of doses of radiation beams necessary to bombard the affected tissues are more significant (1998). This means that the radiation therapist
will need to be well versed in this new technology. Additional training is required. While training is a given, perhaps therapists do not think about the differences in terms of
their role in the treatment. First, technicians must realize that with this type of therapy, patients will be seen in outpatient departments more often which means that a technician working
mostly with hospital patients may not have as much opportunity to use IMRT skills. More importantly, therapists who work in outpatient facilities will be seeing these patients more and will
