The country, formerly a colony of the British and the Spanish, only gained its independence in 1981 after Guatemala had delayed its independence with territorial disputes between themselves
and the former colonel power of the UK (CIA, 2007). Furthermore, Guatemala then refused to recognise Belizes independence until 1992 (CIA, 2007). Globalisation has had a major impact on trade
in and with Belize, and whole globalisation and the idea of the global village has increased the potential of tourism, but the increased trade and influences hat have accompanied
the influences of globalisation have also created increased pressured for destabilising the economy. With independence only gained in the 1980s Belize may be seen as a relatively young
country, where the political system is still developing. In addition to this the country is also one where there is a very young demographic profile. These combined factors have led
to a very changeable political state where those with economic power also have political power (Conaway, 2006). The development of a market economy saw some problems, the populations is very
small and as investment took place there was an overcapacity in the production sector and a falling demand in the market in Belize. The market, then and now, relies in
the ability to make exports. However, when the demand fell, there was also a fall in the prices for the ordinary inputs, an effect that has created economic hardship in
