someone is living in a big city and hardly uses an automobile, if at all, one needs a car to get to work or school or just around town. When
they arrive at the gas pump and see prices that are over two dollars per gallon, it now seems normal. But it is much higher than it had been over
the years. One can say that it is higher than ever, even accounting for inflation. Indeed, the rising gas prices have been a topic of conversation in recent months.
Some say that the price must go down and the present problem is only a temporary fluctuation. However, the government believes that the gas prices will remain high, projecting an
average price of two dollars and a quarter through September of 2005 (Kirchhoff & Healey, 2005). The increase in the government forecast in July of 2005 is an additional eight
cents more per gallon then it was not too long ago (Kirchhoff & Healey, 2005). Government officials are growing weary of the high price and have succumbed to the idea
that it is something that will not go away. Gas prices are setting records and oil prices have also risen enormously (Kirchhoff & Healey, 2005). For businesses that
have transportation costs, it means a 23% (Kirchhoff & Healey, 2005, p.1B) increase in the food, beverage and consumer products industry over a two year period (Kirchhoff & Healey, 2005).
Many times, the additional cost is passed on to the consumer. The price of milk has gone up enormously, and in part, this is attributable to the cost of gas.
Of course, anything that needs to be shipped by plane or truck will incur such expenses. The travel and hospitality industry would also seemingly be hit due to gas pricing.
