There are many factors which impact on the performance and the attractiveness of this industry. The macro factors such as economy and disposable income, weather and season are all known
to influence the performance of the tourism sector at any given point in time. These are changeable, and although they are predicable, some more than others, they create fluctuations. There
are other differences that are present in the tourism sector, which exert a more stable influence. These are demographic factors such as the presence of target markets. One demographic that
is often overlooked, in favour of the more widely understood demographics such as age gender and class, is that of family structure. Understaffing the way that family factors will impact
on tourist behaviour is a valuable source of information for organisations seeking to attract visitors. The family structure has been changing over the last few decades, the increased concentration
of nuclear families with less prevalence of extended families has been observed. One parent families have increased, as have the number of families with step children. Double income families have
also been on the increase (Ahmend 1994). This is relevant due to the increased income, but also the increased restrictions that may be in place regarding the time able to
be spent on leisure. However, when looking at marketing these factors may be relevant, but it is the internal structure of the
family that is being considered. The family type in the tourist sector looks at the make up of the family and also other factors. The main issues will consider will
be the make up, are there children, how old are the children, how may parents are there and the ages of the children and how many people in the household.
