shifting population. One area facing an increase in the population is the western region of Victoria in Australia. By 2030 the population is expected to increase by 40%. This means
that there will be increased health needs as a result of the increasing population. However, it is not only the number of people in the population that will impart on
the health services needed, there are different influences that will impact on the health of the population. One dimension that need to be taken into account is that of the
family structure, not only of the increased population, but the patterns of change seen in the existing population. Many of the influences on health are interdependent and complex, issues
such as race, income and educations are all influences. An important influence, which is often overlooked, is that of family structure. The structures of families in Australia are already changing,
in a number of ways and if there are changes in the a factor that is known to impact on health the importance of the change needs to be assessed
as well as the likely impact. The aim of the paper is to assess the potential impact that changes in family structures will have on the population of Victoria. To
undertake this there need to be an assessment of the way in which the family structure of the population and, and may, change. The paper then assesses the impact that
these changes are likely to have. It may also be noted that there are some family patterns which tend to have cultural origins, which impats or is interdependent with
