very powerful media and have the ability to shape consumer attitudes. This paper identifies three trends that have arisen due to these media and their impact on American attitudes towards
consumerism, work, social responsibility, happiness, the human body, and justice, law and order. Discussion The first trend and probably the most obvious is the increasing use of electronic media
as a means of obtaining news and as a vehicle for social interaction. Young people in particular are abandoning older forms of communications such as newspapers and books for the
instant connection of the Internet, email and in particular, texting. "Recent theorists of new communications media argue that we are entering an era in which interactivity is replacing broadcast as
a primary mode of social integration" (Russell & Holmes, 1996, p. 130). This is particular true in "information rich" countries where the increasing use of all forms of technology, including
mobile phones and the Internet, is "both a measure and a cause of profound cultural changes" (Russell & Holmes, 1996, p. 130). The second trend is one that has
been noted by many sociologists and psychologists in the last several decades: the creation of an unrealistic "body image" as not only the ideal, but the norm, for people, especially
