women who are more attuned to the larger society and those who belong to various cultural groups. One may look at women who belong to a variety of groups and
see that while some are able to make progress in the political spotlight, others just do not fare well in a world that had once been made up of only
white men. A woman from a lower class community who is not white may have more trouble raising money for example. Part of the problem women face when they come
from a culture different from the Anglo-Saxon groups that founded America is that such individuals will always be deemed a minority. Religion is another problem as the mainline Protestant
varieties have always graced the White House, and when President Kennedy was elected, there was much talk about a Catholic being in charge. It was the first time that a
president was not Protestant and this should raise questions in the minds of both men and women. Why are most leaders at the highest levels white males? Thus far, all
presidents and vice presidents have been white and male. Although minority women have run for such offices, they have never come close to winning. One can imagine that it
would take a great deal of effort for a female Buddhist or Muslim or Jew to get anywhere in politics at all. Sexual orientation is also somewhat problematic, especially for
women. When Barney Frank came out to the world there was much gossip, and it is probably even more difficult for women with the Butch stereotype that is so prevalent
in this male-oriented political framework. What element seems to be most important when evaluating what holds female politicians back? Is it gender alone, or might culture or religion play
