For this reason the hospitality industry is often a sector that will attract a diverse range of workers, those local to the area, and coning into the area seeking work.
This can create organization with a potentially high level of cultural diversity which can impact on a company. This may be positive, but there are also some aspects of the
hospitality industry that are unique, which maybe used to argue the benefits may not always be positive. To start this discussion we
need to define what it meant by culture. There is not single all encompassing definition, it is difficult; to define as it is intangible and can only be study by
the observation of its impact and characteristics. Culture may be defined as "the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group; also : the
characteristic features of everyday existence (as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time" (Merriam Webster, 2007). There are many ways in which
culture may be seen as being formed, communicated, emphasised and retained. The culture may be seen as the embodiment of the norms, values and beliefs. These may be seen as
isolated within the company, or reflections of the wider general culture of the area or region. The culture will embody the aspects
such as morals, ethics and the use of tools such as empowerment (Veiga, 1993). According to Trice and Bayer cultures are collective, emotionally charged, historically based, inherently symbolic, and dynamic
(Trice and Beyer, 1993). This is a similar definition and may be seen as relating more to norms and values that are inherent in a culture, (organisational or national).
