may be seen as both a direct and an indirect influence. The use of cars has educed the time spent on other chores and increased the amount of time that
can be spent on leisure, in addition to this car ownership has reduced many barrier to leisure purists, making areas and facilities easier and more convenient to reach. The
impact of the car was seen as soon as cards were available. The first introduction was over one hundred years ago. The initial years of car ownership in the UK
indicated class (OConnell, 1998). Cars were expensive and owned by the rich, They were a leisure tool, driving was seen as a leisure pursuit, but they also opened up the
country. Trips to the seaside and the country were easier, picnic and jaunts became a way of life for those with time to enjoy them (OConnell, 1998). This indicated
the way that car were to impact on life in the future. The development of mass manufacturing techniques by Henry Ford in the US soon spread and cars became more
affordable and used in a wide range of ways. Convenience was a major factor, and it was in the later half of the twentieth century when car ownership was
increasing at a dramatic rate that we see the largest impact on the leisure industry. The use of the car itself may be seen as a leisure pursuits, going
