1. Introduction In any industry there will be changes as the external environment changes and new competitors enter
the market. The responses which are seen by the existing competition will vary on a number of factors, such as the structure of the industry the type, severity and the
strategies adopted by the competition and the response to the market. The airline industry is one industry that has undergoing a major change in both structure and the strategies used
to compete. The dominant airlines in Europe are still the national flag carriers, but they did manage to gain and maintain
a fist mover advantage for many years due to the barriers off entry to the market. The deregulation of the market, in Europe and other areas has allowed increased competition.
This has occurred in many forms, but the most significant has been the entrance of the low cost airlines. This has changed the structure of the market with an increase
in supply and a offering a broader range of choice to potential traveller. This has not only increased choice but also increased market and force companies that were competing in
similar manners to reassess their marketing strategies in order to prevent loss of customers and to try and capitalise on the increased numbers of traveller that these airlines have been
brought to the industry. In this paper we will consider how the budget or low cost airlines have impacted on the industry
