II. LITERATURE REVIEW Women in battle is far from a new concept. Without knowing it at the time, male soldiers who fought in the American Civil War were not sharing the battlefield just with other men; rather, there were a number of women who donned male attire and disguises in order to gain access to the combat arena. During that particular period of time, it was unheard of for the female gender to step out onto the front lines and risk her life, inasmuch as women were supposed to uphold the familys hearth while the men were away at war. However, this particular battle represented a great deal of change within and among the steadfast rules that had always applied in wars gone by: It was the birth of the strong, brave - albeit unidentified - female soldier.
