of the young men and the young women that grow up with the inequality. Theoretically gender differences should make little impact on the life chances of most students, this
was the purpose of many laws that have been passed. Equality is a noble cause and a fine goal, but it is also subjective with many different interpretation. At its
very basic meaning equality must be seen as "The state or quality of being equal" (Dictionary.com. 2003). However, in looking at what this means there is scope for interpretation. The
traditional approach has been that which is embodied by the legislature, with acts such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act
1995, all of which are aimed at giving women and minorities equal opportunities (Lockton, 2000). Gender equality may be one of the hardest to attain as it is more
hidden than other forms of inequality. the appearance of equal opportunity does not lead equality, only a limitation of discrimination. The reasons for this are manifold, resulting from inherent
prejudices due to nature and nurture; the psychological aspect of favouring those we identify with and the society in which prejudice is an ongoing dynamic (Gross, 1987). If equality is
to be measured by equal opportunities, it can be argued that where these are manifesting as intended there will be representative numbers of minorities within the results. Feminists and
