example, are often at a loss in understanding subsequent generations of immigrants. This is true even when those generations are their own children and grandchildren! At the same
time there is a transformation of societal place and value that comes along with immigration. Sociologists have attempted to describe this phenomena for some time. One of the
more interesting explanations is Max Webers "Values Axioms", an explanation that encompasses the transformation that occurs over subsequent generations of immigrant families in terms of what it means to be
a member of an immigrant population. Each successive generation it seems often moves further and further from their cultures traditional values and lifeways.
Weber describes a number of axioms that are applicable to the immigrant experience. In one he presents a multidimensional model of stratification, a model which entails a separation
of power according to three factors: power, wealth, and prestige. According to Webers model, power is the degree to which an individual or cultural group can control others.
Wealth is the degree of affluence, in either objects or money, that is attached to an individual or cultural group. Prestige is the degree of respect or importance
attached to an individual or cultural group. As will be explained below, each of these factors are both directly and indirectly applicable to the successive generations of immigrant populations.
When immigrants move to the U.S. they typically settle in ethnic neighborhoods that are made up primarily of other immigrants from the same
