artists. Yet, artists and writers and musicians are often associated with such things as left-handedness, science, alcoholism, dyslexia and a host of other interesting entities that are not definitively tied
to art. There is just a sense that these "creative" types belong together and such is the sense that revolution invites art. In a book regarding art in Cuba, Camnitzer
(2003)writes: "Functionaries and artists come from a common pool of intellectuals and are, more often than not, bound by friendship" (p.132). One can see this everywhere. The fact that musicians
are sometimes a part of revolution is certainly apparent as well. Musicians often rail against the government. There are many political bands to crop up protesting one thing or
another. This is often found in the rock genre, a type of music that Cuba does ban. Again, artists and musicians are creative types and are aligned with intellectualism
and the political. Often, artists try to say things with their creations. They paint or draw or sculpt because they want to express their emotions about the current state of
affairs. They want to make their opinions known to the world. Artistic expression is something supported by all free nations around the globe. It is aligned with the rights of
people in most democratic societies. In Cuba, there is debate as to whether or not artists are free to express themselves. On one hand is the notion that there is
nothing to expressly prohibit art, and in fact, Castro claims to be in favor of freedom for artists, but the reality seems to be something else. Some time ago, Castro
