of what makes the good life. The following paper examines what The Iliad offers up as the ideal good life. The Iliad: What is the Good Life? One
could well argue that the good life is one of adventure, personal challenges, and a demonstration of honor in Greek society. But, in reality, these are things that can be
argued to lead to the good life. A good life, or the image of a good life, conjures up images of a persons life after they are done with most
of their lifes challenges, after life has tested them and then offered up a good life. In the case of The Iliad the story is one that takes place in
the midst of challenges, and as such does not offer any solid images of life after challenges. In light of the fact that the story takes place in war
times, one must look to see what it is that these individuals, primarily men, desire in their personal good lives. Clearly they are immersed in war and for some, such
as Achilles, this is the good life. He is not a character who seems to desire times of peace or quiet but rather a man who is happiest during battle,
during chaos, during war. He is a soldier and as such that is his good life, especially when coupled with an obedience to the gods, as noted when he states,
"Goddess...however angry a man may be, he must do as you two command him. This will be best, for the gods ever hear the prayers of him who has obeyed
