other hand, that very process of coming together of different peoples can create conflict, intolerance and violence. These contrasting images of the city overlap and play off one another,
perhaps because the city comprises so many worlds" (Massey et al, 2000, p. 1). II. THE MAKING OF A CITY One can site example after example as to the
usefulness of tensions in understanding cities; Massey et al (2000) recognize how some of the worlds most progressive and distinguishing urban communities are the product of this synergistic coupling.
The urbanization of America during the latter part of the nineteenth century, for example not only changed the nations values, but it also created unforeseen problems with regard to the
bustling growth of cities, the complications of new technologies and the reactions that people had to such significant transformation. Indeed, for a society to survive, it must be willing
to grow. However, there comes a point when that growth turns into a detriment more than the asset it was originally intended to be - such was the case
