ego and superego are important in the development of personality. Another focus of Freuds was on dream interpretation and the many symbols that confront individuals in their lives. To Freud--unlike
Jung who believed in synchronicity-- people create the symbols subconsciously and a slip of the tongue or a dream, reveals a hidden part of the individual personality. In other words,
such events have no greater meaning beyond the individual who either makes the statements or has the dream. In Freuds topographical analysis of the psyche, as demonstrated in Freuds
Introduction to Lectures on Psychoanalysis, a concept known as parapraxes is introduced. Parapraxes refers to things such as a slip of the tongue or coincidences that really do not
measure up as a chance experience. For example, someone might promise to bring an item to return to their friend but inadvertently forget to bring it. The individual might say:
"Im so sorry I forgot the book again. I dont know how I could have forgotten it. I left it right on the counter and planned to grab it on
my way out." She honestly believed it was unintentional. However, there might be a hidden motivation for her lack of recall. She forgot to bring the book perhaps because she
did not want to bring up the subject that the book addresses, or simply really wanted to keep the book. Perhaps she was hoping that the friend would say "No
problem. Just keep it then!" Actions do not always speak louder than words. Puns, jokes and things that are just blurted out are clues to what is going on
