in society, but in different ways. While Marx saw his plan of Communism as being able to manifest eventually, Weber saw his ideas play out in the past and present,
creating a strong foundation for the future. Government type--or the tug of war between capitalism and communism--is central to the themes on which these authors wrote. Max Weber (1991) looks
at the rise of capitalism as a partial result of the Protestant work ethic for example. To Weber, the development of the modern personality, a firm work ethic and a
motivational structure all is indicative of greater productivity. Karl Marx, on the other hand, focuses on theories surrounding labor and alienation. To an extent, Marx and Engels reconciled their theories
with that of the antithesis of liberalism while at the same time condoned the satisfaction of man. Yet, some may ask how could they ignore individual choice? After all, this
is central to the application of Max Webers ideas. A student will want to note that the application of ideas is important when writing about the relationship between ideas and
experience. How much of the authors ideas are simply cerebral exercises and how much of it is practical? It is therefore important that a student writing on this subject examine
the ways in which authors answer such questions. In terms of Marxs inattention to individuality and the practical application of his works, there is an explanation. One explanation is that
in a communist society, nobody has an exclusive sphere of activity; rather, each can become accomplished in any branch he likes and society only regulates the general production, thereby making
