with a war, but much of it concerns women. During a raid, Chryseis is taken captive. Agamemnon is ordered to return Chryseis and while he is not adverse to
the idea, he calls her a prize and says that if he cannot have her, he will have someone else. Women are certainly objectified in the Iliad. Yet, women are
important to society and it seems as if women and war are separate but considered important in the ancient world. In the work, when Agamemnon can not have Chryseis he
takes a substitute, Briseis. Achilleus is the hero. He is the one who originally demands the return of Chryseis and he interestingly has a goddess for a mother. Achilleus
fights for his daughter and Agamemnons role becomes important. He is happy to take Briseis as opposed to his original choice, further supporting the notion that women are not individuals
in this ancient society. Here, there is gender stratification, but that is perhaps more apparent in a modern analysis. Certainly, at the time, it had been the war theme that
was most pertinent. The Iliad above all is about war. It is something which was familiar to the Greeks at the time as Homer based his story on fiction which
would occur in the context of history and mythology. While the tale has been critically acclaimed, thought of as being primarily about war and peace, good and evil and things
of that nature, it appears that the component of gender has perhaps not been discussed enough. While one can say that things were different then, things have not changed very
much as women are still in a somewhat subservient position to this day. Yet, at the time, the burden placed on women to obey and look beautiful, was much greater
