found in other cultures and their particular literary art forms such as the Middle East and especially Roman culture. The following paper examines the characters of Odysseus from Homers Greek
story The Odyssey and Aeneas from Virgils Roman story The Aeneid. The Ideal Warrior: Odysseus and Aeneas It is perhaps interesting to note that the two primary stories being
examined are essentially based on historical legends associated with the infamous battle of Troy, and both stories essentially seem to take place after the fall of Troy. But, The Odyssey
is a Greek story and The Aeneid is a Roman story. In this connection one can clearly see, and better understand, the influence that Greek culture and history had upon
Roman culture and history, although the Roman culture seemed to take it as their own and adapt it, as Virgil did in writing his story of Aeneas. While there
are likely many varying differences and similarities between the two cultures, with the Greek culture clearly influencing all cultures that came in contact with it, the most powerful similarity lies
in the ideal image of a male hero or warrior. In both cultures the people were founded in a patriarchal way of life, seeing man as the greatest creature in
the world. One could well research and argue that the culture of the Greeks was so immersed in this powerful belief that a mans relationship with another man was far
more important than his relationship with his wife. This is something that can clearly be seen in the epic story of Gilgamesh wherein Gilgamesh, when met with Enkidu, turned away
