diagnosis from their single diagnosis counterparts. Therefore, different theoretical models must be employed in the development of assessment and treatment plans. Scope of the Problem
A common but disturbing dual diagnosis that is common to the African-American population is that of alcoholism and post-traumatic stress disorder. African-American populations
typically reveal more detrimental drinking patterns than their Caucasian counterparts, and this is attributed in large part to their alcohol consumption preferences (African-American Drinking Patterns More Deadly, 2003). The
fact that African-Americans tend to indulge in binge-drinking more that other populations, means they are less likely to receive the health benefits of moderate and consistent alcohol consumption (African-American Drinking
Patterns More Deadly, 2003). For example, "grape wine is most often consumed moderately and regularly with meals, but if consumed in irregular binges outside meals, the same amount of
alcohol may be much more detrimental" (African-American Drinking Patterns More Deadly, 2003). Post-traumatic stress disorder is a significant problem as
well, and is defined as a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience of witnessing a life-threatening event such as a rape, natural disaster, military combat, terrorist incidents such
