the most dramatic social changes that family structure has ever witnessed, which is the emergence of single-parent families as a common, established family form rather than a marginalized rarity. However,
it is also true that divorce and non-marital childbearing were evident long before the rise in single-parent families. There is a prevalent attitude, both among the general public and some
scholars, that single-parent families weaken family and societal norms. Furthermore, there is a prevalent belief, particularly among conservatives, that the concept of marriage between same-sex couples and adoption by gay
or lesbian parents threatens not only the institution of marriage, but the foundation of the American family. Research shows that children who grow up in households with their married
biological mothers and fathers tend to experience, on average, a lower incidence of behavioral, academic and social problems than children growing up in other types of families (Magnuson and Berger,
2009). In a study that used longitudinal data from the Maternal and Child Supplement of the National Survey of Youth, Magnuson and Berger (2009) determined that children residing in single-mother
families experienced small decreases in academic achievement and increases in behavior problems (Magnuson and Berger, 2009). According to President Obama, statistics show that children who are raised in households where
fathers are absent, there is five times greater likelihood that they will live in poverty and commit crime (Biblarz and Stacey, 2010). As these statistics indicate, single-mothers are negatively impacted
