character is representative of what American culture values in men: toughness, strength, stamina, good looks, and even an endearing modesty that earns him many friends and admirers. The
Virginian is without doubt an adventurer, and he embarks on a vast array of rescues, journeys, and other exciting feats that add a definitive aura of mystery, drama and intrigue
to his personality. Eventually, even Molly can no longer ignore his charms. According to The Virginian, the ideal American male
is a man who is able to be successful in a number of areas. For instance, in this case, the character of the Virginian is adept at ranching, at
saving lives, at wooing women, etc. He doesnt encounter very much rejection or failure. He is a man who is sure of himself but not boastful nor an
egoist. He is merely confident of his abilities and is able to easily disregard the opinions of others when forming his own self-identity. The Virginian, and hence the
ideal American male, is a man who is rugged and adept at handling the curve balls of life. He is a man who can take charge of a difficult
situation and can emerge unscathed by the trials and tribulations of life. Then for the first time I noticed a
man who sat on the high gate of the corral, looking on. For he now climbed down with the undulations of a tiger, smooth and easy, as if his
muscles flowed beneath his skin. The others had all visibly whirled the rope, some of them even shoulder high. I did not see his arm lift or move.
