to answer the question, To what extent does the Constitution embody 18th century attitudes and to what extent is it an attempt to form a new kind of government? Discussion
Before we can answer that, we need to know what life was like in the 18th century. Research reveals that for most people, life was "based on subsistence living" (Stages
of human nature). An individuals place in life was "dictated by their bloodline and their social position was secured by birth. If a man was born a peasant, he stayed
a peasant, and he died a peasant" (Stages of human nature). Not only that, but people didnt travel; often they were born, lived and died within the same locality
(States of human nature). Life was so harsh that people-at least the common people-were focused solely on making a living (States of human nature). "Human ingenuity, the desire to be
free, and the ability to reason for themselves, instead of living by the divinely bestowed power of an absolute monarch, did not exist in the first half of the 18th
century" (States of human nature). Man was "bland, oppressed and uncreative" and often "oppressed by a central ruler" whose authority could not be question "because of the fear of God"
(States of human nature). Now lets look at the Constitution. The Preamble sets out the purpose of the document clearly: We the people of the United States, in order
to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our
