Mason seeks to encourage readers to re-evaluate their own lives and their own sense of self. She attempts to illuminate readers about the wasteland that exists in terms of morality, emotions, relationships, etc. Through this message Mason hopes to inspire readers to make their own lives different and to not travel the same roads as her "doomed" characters. Author Bobbie Ann Mason describes a "wasteland" in her book, Shiloh. This is clearly evident in the marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean. What is so revealing is their expectations of what they thought marriage would be versus the reality of their lives. This is such a poignant topic because so many people can relate to those feelings - the divorce rate is clear evidence of this. These characters arent inherently "bad" in any particular way, but are completely "lost" in many regards. When an accident befalls Leroy and he injures his leg, he literally becomes a different person, unable to understand himself outside of his profession and his "capabilities". And whats even more sad, is that he doesnt really see what is happening to him. He merely knows that without his job he is lost, but he doesnt have the insight to look inward for the answers. He will probably not be able to drive his rig again. It sits in the backyard, like a gigantic bird that has flown home to roost (Mason, 2001, p. 3). The reality of course is ...
