This paper considers this concept in regard to A Midsummer Nights Dream and the quintessential romance of all time, Romeo and Juliet. Discussion Fittingly, a discussion of true union
is found in the introduction to Midsummer Nights Dream; the introduction is by R.A. Foakes, who describes Peter Brooks 1970 production of the play, now considered iconic. That production, which
was mounted by the Royal Shakespeare Company, featured a white box as a set, with the actors on trapezes; it put the emphasis squarely on the players rather than the
effects. That is, there was no enchanted wood, no glittery costumes, no fog or fairy dust; it was the actors and the text. Brook did something unusual, which is now
done fairly frequently: he "doubled" the roles of Oberon/Theseus and Titania/Hippolyta; that is, he had the same actors play both roles (Foakes). Brooks said "the couples were closely related because
Theseus and Hippolyta are trying to discover what constitutes the true union of a couple, and that they go through quarrels as Oberon and Titania in order to make their
marriage complete. This idea is related to Brooks reading of the play as written for adults, and hence a very powerful sexual play" (Foakes 23). Until this time, many directors
seem to see the play as a literal fairy tale for children and staged it as such; Brook restored the sensuality to the play, and the question of what makes
a true union between a man and a woman. The Dream is one of Shakespeares funniest and most beloved comedies, but there are undertones of threat and violence in it,
since the fairies are extremely powerful supernatural beings. Then too, the trick that Oberon plays on Titania, making her fall in love with a monster, could be considered violence, though
