firms that have an existing information technology infrastructure or would be able to install one easily due to their location within a developed market where the potential use of the system are likely to be technologically literate. However, supply chains are not limited to the developed world or areas where there are existing high levels of technological infrastructures. It may be argued that some of the areas where increased efficiency within the supply chain is most needed are the areas where there is the least potential for investment. When considering the implementation of an information technology solution to increase efficiency within a supply chain it may be argued that a small village in rural India may not be an area that would come immediately to mind as able to benefit. However, ITC has seen the potential and instigated the eChaupal project in the village of Dahod, located in Madhya Pradesh in central India. This has been an innovative project with its foundation in the traditional methods utilized in supply chain management which is location sentries, but bringing it into the 20th century with use of information technology is benefiting the majority of the stakeholders. The project appears to being successful, despite a number of problems and issues. The successful implementation of the ITC eChoupal may also be interpreted as a model which is suitable for comes the other areas, as long as it is fully understood. This paper will at the way in which the eChapaul initiative was implemented, looking at issues such as the objectives and the problems in the way in which the initiative fits in with supply chain management principles as well as the way which eChoupal creates its value.
