2003). Delta Electronics Groups provide products that are energy efficient and that improve peoples lives ("Delta," 2003). Yet, while each struggles with their own issues, a dark cloud looms over
the IT industry. Many professionals are being laid off. This is unprecedented. Since the advent of computers, the computer scientist was in great demand. Suddenly, with significant macroeconomic problems, the
industry is hurting, too many people are graduating with computer science degrees, and Bill Gates has effectively rendered some older computer languages obsolete. Changes in technology have left some older
computer programmers in the lurch. While things appear dismal for the IT professional today, a CIO can help staff to deal with the changing times. How might a CIO
motivate the information systems staff to assist in assessing return on investment and to overcome fear of job loss? First, it should be said that job loss is a
reality of this industry and most IT professionals do have this concern. At Tellabs for example, there has been an offer for volunteers to leave their jobs ("Tellabs," 2003). While
this does not seem to be anything that employees want to do, the company does offer a nice severance package (2003). This may be little consolation for those who fear
losing their jobs, but it can be seen as a gesture so that others will not suffer. A CIO might motivate Tellab employees by explaining to them that the company
is doing everything it can to make the inevitable loss of jobs more comfortable. Those who do volunteer to leave will get benefits that they might otherwise not, so it
is in some employees best interest to take the deal. A CIO will also want to point out that Tellabs is not the only company that must lose employees. This
