The protestors carried "signs bearing slogans such as Defund the Fund, Break the Bank, and Dump the Debt" (Holton, 2000, p. A319). Protestors accused the World Bank and the
International Monetary Fund of being negligent and alleged these two institutions had not alleviated poverty in the world and they had not promoted sustainable development. The groups also accused these
two institutions of "exacerbating social and environmental decline" (Holton, 2000, p. A319). The masses of people included representatives from numerous countries who wanted to increase the awareness of the public
about their own countrys forests. For example, Emmy Hafild, a representative from the Indonesian Environmental Forum, known as WALHI, said: "If we want to reduce deforestation we have to distinctly
reduce logging activities and change the large-scale corporate approach advocated by the World Bank and IMF into a small-scale community based approach" (Knight, 2000, p. ITEM00108002). Hafild went on
to explain that when Indonesia signed the agreement with IMF, there were a number of restrictions included in the structural adjustment policies for the country. The cuts in spending severely
decreased the governments ability to monitor the environment and what was being done to the environment. Hafild explained: "The environmental budget was never great to begin with then it was
cut in half and now illegal logging is happening all over Indonesia" (Knight, 2000, p. ITEM00108002). Another person who flew to Washington was Ronnie Siakor, who is the coordinator of
