several films. One of the most famous films is the 1939 version starring Charles Laughton. However, as is often the case with films derived from novels there is a great deal in the film that was left out from the novel, and some perhaps very important elements that were changed. The following paper compares and contrasts the novel and the 1939 film version. The Hunchback of Notre Dame The primary characters of the film are Quasimodo, Esmerelda, the Archdeacon Claude Frollo, Pierre Gringoire, and Phoebus. In the novel there are many more characters and there are many more subplots taking place besides the plot that simply involves Quasimodo and others mentioned. The novel and the film essentially begin the same with the festival taking place in the streets and Quasimodo watching and participating, although reluctantly. There is the story line that involves Quasimodos instant fascination and love with Esmerelda and also the obsessive lust possessed by Frollo for Esmerelda as well. In the case of Esmerelda both the film and the book have her changing her mind about how she sees Quasimodo and how she begins to see him as a kind individual rather than just a beast. In the film it remains relatively true to the novel as it pertains to Phoebus. Phoebus is a military man and Esmerelda is quite taken with him. She feels he is a real man and romanticizes what he is like. However, she learns that he is nothing more than a man who likes to have his way with women and so she denies him. In the film he is killed at this time by Frollo for Frollo is so incredibly jealous of Esmerelda. In the book it is believed that Phoebus was killed but he was really only ...
