two are generally considered classics: the 1923 silent with Lon Chaney, and the 1939 version with Charles Laughton. This paper discusses the silent film and its impact on the film
industry. Discussion It has proven surprisingly difficult to find information about the film in the context of its impact on the industry, but reading between the lines of some
of the critics we can infer a few of the things that make it a standout. The central story is of unrequited love, and of the way in which the
world judges by appearances. In this case, Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell ringer of Notre Dame kidnaps the gypsy girl Esmeralda at the behest of Jehan; Jehan is the brother of
the Archdeacon of the cathedral and the Archdeacon protects Quasimodo (Ashlin). Thus he is obligated to do whatever is asked of him (Ashlin). However, Quasimodo is caught and jailed, and
then sentenced to a public flogging (Ashlin). He is given 50 lashes and exhibited in the public square before the cathedral while the crowd jeers. Only Esmeralda, the girl he
tried to kidnap, takes pity on him and brings him water which moves him so much that he falls in love with her (Ashlin). Later, she is falsely accused of
murder and he saves her-for another man (Ashlin). There are many other subplots in the film but the real story is of the love Quasimodo bears for the beautiful girl
he can never have. They are similar in that they are both outcasts from society, he because of his physical ugliness and she because of her status as a gypsy,
and that bonds them. The story of their relationship is powerful, and if all Esmeralda feels for him is compassion, it is still a revelation to him that a beautiful
