It is a critical component of the digestive system, a component responsible for a number of additional tasks as well. Oxygen-rich blood from the aorta enters the liver through
the hepatic artery. Digested food from the small intestine travels to the liver through the portal vein. The liver manufactures a number of chemicals and functions in blood purification
among its many other functions. In all the liver is said to be responsible for some five hundred different functions. One of
the primary functions of the liver is filtration. Blood passes through the liver where contaminants such as excess tissue fluid are filtered out. The liver is the bodys
amino acid factory, those substances which form all of lifes vital proteins, as well as its hormones, and enzymes (Colby, 1996). The liver manufactures amino acids utilizing the proteins
obtained by the body through its food sources (Smartbasics, 1997). In addition to its importance in filtration and the production of amino acids, the liver is a critical storage
site for vitamins and minerals, particularly for Vitamins A, D, B12, and iron. In short, its function is intimately related to the rest of the bodys physiology and is
sensitive to a number of impacts including toxification through such activities as alcoholism, to diseases such as hepatitis, and even to improper diet.
The function of the liver in amino acid production alone is critical. Amino acids form long molecular chains which compose these substances (Colby, 1996). These in turn are
