Fungi are incredibly complex both in their outward appearance and their environmental function. Most, either
directly or indirectly, have importance to mankind. The world, after all, is a wonderfully fascinating place, a place where all organisms interrelate on one level or another. Some
of those interactions are positive, from the perspective of man, but others are less positive. Fungi in general literally interlace the earth on
which we walk. Fungi are an important part of our environment and serve, in part, to break down rock into soil and to speed along the evolution of regions
of the world that are inhospitable for one reason or another to regions of incredible ecological complexity. Many fungi are not
only edible but delectable. Many have health benefits. Consider, for example, the well-touted shiatsu mushroom. Others have psychological impacts when digested. Consider, for example, psilocybin, the
fungus that is intentionally grown and ingested by those in the counterculture movement that appreciate the psychedelic high it imparts. Another example of a fungus that has affected man
is Claviceps purpurea. This species affects wheat and is otherwise known as ergot. Today many blame the events that unfolded in Salem Massachusettes on ergot. In the
