Church which presented the art world with figures that were clothed and represented in some gloriously religious setting. In more recent times the art world saw change from the 18th
to the 19th century in terms of the human figure. The following paper examines a few paintings that help us see that change. The paintings discussed are Manets "Olympia (1863)"
and "Young Girl on the Threshold of the Garden at Bellevue (1884)," Philipp Otto Runges "Der Morgen (1808)," and Jacques-Louis Davids "The Sabine Women Enforcing Peace by Running Between the
Combatants (1794-99)." Paintings The paintings that are under examination vary greatly in terms of content and time period. Manets painting alone illustrate great change. With that in mind
we first discuss the oldest painting, Jacques-Louis Davids "The Sabine Women Enforcing Peace by Running Between the Combatants (1794-99)." This particular painting seems very regal and also very historical
in terms of presenting the viewer with mythological legends. It is a very powerful picture that renders the female figure strongly, with infants and combatants. There is tension and the
figures themselves seem soft despite the tension within the painting. It is also very romantic looking painting because of its soft tones and soft images. Perhaps the most significant aspect
of this painting, as it concerns the human figure, is seen in the figure of the woman. She is presented in such as way as to look pure and feminine.
