The human eye is one of the bodys most complex organs. From an external viewpoint the
eye provides few hints as to its internal complexity. Externally we see three main parts, the pupil, the iris, and the sclera (the white of the eye). Covering
it all is the cornea, the transparent external surface of the eye. The way the eye works to receive images and to send those images to the brain, however,
is considerably more fascinating than it might appear given the relative simplicity of its surface. The eyes pupil, that dark part at the
center of the eye, contracts and expands to regulate the amount of light that enters. It does so as a result of the contractions of the iris, the colored
muscular part of the eye that is the most visible of its external features, the part of the eye that is associated with the color upon which we place so
much aesthetic value. The color of the iris is the result of varying amounts and ratios of eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanins are brown/black melanins while pheomelanins are red/yellow
melanins and the mixture that results determines whether a person has brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, or hazel eyes. The sclera is
the relatively rigid wall of the eyeball that forms its somewhat asymmetric spherical shape. Continuous with it is the cornea, a structure works with the internal crystalline lens of
