The human digestive system is a complex network of organs, enzymes and mechanics, the combination of which results in an incredibly efficient system for the absorption of the nutrients
that are needed to sustain life. Stevens and Hume (2004) clarify that the primary purpose of the digestive system is to "provide for the assimilation of nutrients required for
energy, maintenance, growth, and reproduction". The human digestive system is particularly interesting in the way that it accomplishes those functions. Food enters
our body, of course, through our mouths. The mouth is, in fact, the first component of the digestive system. It is equipped not just with teeth that are
designed to break down food but also with our muscular tongue that functions in the same process. Food enters the mouth it is first processed by our incisors
which bite through it. We then use our tongue to shift the smaller chunks of food around to further break them apart and to position them on our molars
where we grind the food to a finer texture. Digestion actually begins in the mouth but it is a very preliminary form of digestion. The addition of enzymes
such as ptyalin in the saliva secreted from the salivary glands starts to break the chunks down even further from the basic starches to sugars.
From the mouth, our food travels down our esophagus. It is through the esophagus which food must pass from the mouth to the stomach
and this too is part of the digestive process. This is a mechanical process and is accomplished in most vertebrates, man included, by the rhythmic contraction of muscles which
