racism that still plagues this country. This paper considers a photo of one of Katrinas victims, and a poem about the event. The Photo The photo, which is untitled (in
the accompanying story, she asks "Wheres the help?" so thats what well call it for reference), was taken by Michael Ainsworth of the Dallas Morning News. It appears on the
Smithsonian Magazine website, and shows a woman named Cynthia Scott sitting on a freeway overpass. Shes wearing a black tank top, black and white shorts, and lime green sandals. Shes
slumped over, her left elbow is on her left knee and her left hand is bunched into a fist, which shes holding to her mouth. Her right arm is on
her right knee and her hand dangles limply. But its her face that is arresting and moving. The viewer can only see part of it, because her hand is in
the way, but what is visible is a portrait of despair. Her eyes are wide but not with hope, instead she seems to be looking into a far distance, waiting
for help that never came. To her left, her twin grandbabies sleep in a carrier; there is a shirt on the railing behind them, and half-empty bottles of pop
and trash everywhere (Ainsworth). To her right is her grandson, dressed in blue short and a white t-shirt; he appears to be about 10 feet from his grandmother (Ainsworth). The
picture is a portrait of abject hopelessness, and is a vivid reminder of not only the suffering caused by this horrific event, but also of the toll poverty takes on
