Lemuel Gulliver, changes the way he looks at the world. Along the way, he struggles to understand the human experience, and upon its conclusion, Gulliver realizes he has
completed the most important journey of his wife, the one "towards self-discovery" (MacKeracher 17). In each of his four adventures, Gulliver gains more insight into the human condition and
what makes it unique. Broadly defined, the human condition is that which distinguishes humans from their nonhuman or animal counterparts. Humans are all motivated by the basic desires
of love and security. They have a need to belong, which is why they form societies and a need for order which is why they form governments. However,
they also desire power, dominance and self-importance, which is why there are wars, a longing to understand and control the universe, which explain the enduring appeal of science and technology.
Also shared by all humans is a fear of the unknown, which is why there is prejudice. First, Gulliver finds himself in Lilliput, which is in a
constant state of war with their enemies, the Blefuscudians over the ridiculous issue of how to break an egg. He is a giant in a land of tiny people,
and because of his size he has power much in the way empires do. Gulliver dismisses the citizens rituals, such as rope dancing, as absurd, which speaks to the
