portions of the body were represented more strongly than others. We see in very ancient findings how certain figures, such as female goddesses were perhaps even created without hands, heads,
or feet. These ancient representations seem crude in some ways as they are stiff and all but lifeless as they focus on aspects respected and idealized by a culture. But,
as time moves on we see how art changed and the representation of the human body became more and more realistic. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines the
human body in three separate pieces of art from various times in history. The pieces discussed are the New York Kouros, and ancient Greek sculpture, Corpus of Christ from 1250,
and Gustave Courbets painting "Woman with a Parrot" from 1866. Kouros The New York Kouros is not a one of a kind sculpture. In fact, there is no
specific title to the piece that would set it apart from others, save for the fact it is kept in New York. There are many kouroi and Greece was not
the only place that made them. They are, in fact, very similar to Egyptian works that depict young men, but the Greek kouroi are far more relaxed and perhaps less
ornate. It is believed that this particular sculpture was carved to stand before the burial site of a youth who was the member of an affluent family. The work
of art itself, however, can represent many things to many viewers in relationship to the past. As such, perhaps the best description is as follows: "the kouros is basically meaningless
-or rather, its significance must lie in only distinguishing characteristics, namely, its nudity, its youth, its beauty, its autonomy, and its immutability: in other words, its form" (Kerr). In other
