The following paper examines the novel, the connections and then discusses if the film based on the novel is faithful in the presentation of the connections seen in the novel. The Hours by Cunningham The characters in this novel are Virginia Woolf, Laura Brown, Clarissa Vaughn, and the character of Clarissa Dalloway who is the character being created by Virginia Woolf. The characters, as can be seen, are all women and they are all seemingly experiencing something universal in relationship to life, depression, happiness, regrets, contemplation, and ultimate identity. Most people are aware that the real Virginia Woolf was an author who ultimately killed herself due to many emotional problems. This is a very central point to the story as all these women deal with their own thoughts of suicide, the suicide of another, or the possible suicide for the character being written by Woolf. The suicide of Woolf is dealt with in the prologue of the book. In doing this Cunningham introduces the reader unfamiliar with Woolfs story or life to her situation and her death. In addition, Cunningham illustrates the importance of the subject of suicide, setting the stage for understanding where the female characters are coming from, how they feel, and what their future may possess. When suicide is made such a powerful introduction the reader is well aware that there will be some deep connection that takes place in the novel between all these different women.
