as many decades ago, business owners would simply pay whatever they deemed appropriate and the menial laborer would be at the mercy of their employers. That situation does not exist
today due to the power of unions. Part of the problem union members face is that some companies do not want to hire full time workers, for example, because
they will have to provide them with benefits and that costs companies money. This is true in particular for industries where contracts come with perks and excellent benefits. Benefits are
part of the fight for most union workers. Also, when companies can get away with hiring part time employees instead of full time workers, they make a great deal of
money by not having to provide the numerous benefits associated with full time employment. Such might be in the form of health insurance, vacation pay, holiday pay, and numerous other
things which are often part of labor contracts but only available to full time workers. In the hotel industry in Canada, many of these issues are relevant. Hotel workers in
Canada face the same problems that union workers around the world do, and similarly those who are employed without benefit of unionization and choose to work in Canadas hotel industry
are subject to many work dilemmas. Of course, they have some advantages in that they usually have flexible hours and the pay is relatively good. Some issues that Canadian workers
face is related to wages. Unionized employees feel that they are not getting enough money and the part time/full time dilemma explained earlier to an extent fits into this equation.
