Henry V is a very complex and intriguing tale. Also, like many of his plays, the political drama, that can often be confusing and incredibly detailed, is intermixed with common
people and common events. It seems that Shakespeare did this in order to bring a bit of humanity to the plays, but also to help the audience relate to the
characters within the stories on a more personal level. In addition, these characters often provided information to the audience, information they may not have had the ability to receive or
information that no one in the play is privy to. There are many complexities in such characters. In Henry V there is a woman known as the Hostess, or the
Hostess Quickly. She was seen in other plays as well, being known as Mistress Quickly. The following paper looks at her character and discusses the purpose of her character in
the play. The Hostess It is important to first note that the character of the Hostess was one, as mentioned, who has been seen in various Shakespeare plays concerning
one Henry or another. This paper relies on some previous plays to examine her character, but primarily relies on Henry V in terms of seeing her character and her purpose,
a purpose that is perhaps very subtle. In the beginning of this play we know that there is great tension between England and France, as the characters seem to
ready for war. We see the Hostess and she is being fought over by her husband Pistol and the man who loves her still Nym. In a previous play these
two were "drinking companions of Henry" in a tavern run by the Hostess (Cummings). "Nym is resentful about Ancient [ensign] Pistol, who has married the Hostess (Mistress Nell Quickly) even
