fact, not only is it unnecessary, its existence will cause grief for many New Yorkers. Hospital closures would result in a greater inequality than exists now. Why? The closures will
likely be in parts of the city which are problematic to begin with. It is hard to imagine that the prestigious, high priced hospitals which cater to the elite will
close. Rather, the small facilities that are not associated with universities, or the ones that service the poor, are the ones that will be closed. The effects of such closures
will be the creation of negative experiences for those who are already disenfranchised. There are different points of view on this subject. Some people believe that closing the hospitals will
fix budgetary woes, but many are concerned with the risks that will result from closure. Boissonnault (2006) remarks that "any recommendations from the commission will be painful, and for some
stakeholders, any plan to close any hospital would be unacceptable" (p.11). In fact, many people believe that the plan is unreasonable. One remark found at the Healthsignals site is: "Its
much easier to let failing hospitals to fail (and we havent done that) than to deliberately force closure" ("Healthsignals in New York," 2006). Indeed, it is more advantageous to allow
the hospitals to stay open, and if they do not meet expectations, then they will just fail on their own. Forcing closure is something that does highlight failure and inequality.
Of course, turning a blind eye to the problem is not good either. Certainly, hospitals need to be examined but shutting down hospitals will do nothing but make the situation
