more horrific than another during that time in history. War is always horrific and perhaps, more often than not, people envision Vietnam as a horrific war. But, WWI was horrific because it saw an incredibly stressful and destructive sort of warfare, the first time such an experience had ever occurred. Erich Maria Remarque presents the images of such a war in All Quiet on the Western Front. The following paper examines the novel, and other authors commentaries about WWI, as it involves the horrors of WWI. The Horrors of War: All Quiet on the Western Front Throughout Remarques the main character, Paul, sees and realizes how the men are like animals and savages, struggling to survive in a world that makes no sense at all. He notes, for example, how they were always plunging "into the horror" (Remarque 63). This continuous sense of horror could well wear men down as they faced danger after danger all the time. He indicates, "Bombardment, barrage, curtain-fire, mines, gas, tanks, machine-guns, hand-grenades-words, words, they hold the horror of the world" (Remarque 72). It is clear that WWI was a war that held a great deal of frightening war technology, and much of the war was fought in the trenches. It is often referred to as a trench war. And, as one author notes, "There had never been anything like it before and there wont ever be anything like it again" (Keller). Another author, a man who was in WWI, indicated how serving in the trenches, in the front lines, would ultimately wear a man down (Patch).
