of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them (Catechism of the Catholic Faith, para 234). PART 1 Mystery of the Trinity The mystery of the Holy Trinity is so difficult that while the doctrine is widely accepted by Christians (Dulle, n.d.), it is so difficult to explain that most Christians do not attempt it (Fatula, 1991). Fatula suggests Christians need to become comfortable with this mystery because it is central to the Christian faith (1991). The question is how do humans become comfortable with something they cannot explain? Because it is so difficult to explain, Christians adopt a stance of silence on the topic (Fatula, 1991) yet this is a doctrine in which Christians believe firmly (Dulle, n.d.), John tells the crowd that he was sent by God to testify to the true light (John 1:7-9). John said that God told him: "On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the holy Spirit" (John 1:33). When he saw Jesus, he also saw the "Spirit come down like a dove from the sky and remain upon him" (John 1:32). This is specific testimony to the Three Persons, God, who spoke to John, Jesus and the Spirit. The doctrine of the Holy Trinity has evolved over centuries although it was at the Council of Constantinople in 379 that "the first definitive, orthodox, universal creedal statement was made which discussed the relationship of the Father, Son, and Spirit" (Dulle, n.d.).
