are important. Through taking pilgrimages the people feel they have appeased gods, protected their people, given proper homage, and perhaps even attained greater favor with their spiritual beings. In "The
Hold Life Has: Coca and Cultural Identity in an Andean Community" by Catherine J. Allen the author takes us through many of the cultures practices, one of which is pilgrimages.
The following paper examines some of the symbolic conditions and practices of the pilgrimages of these people as presented in Allens work. Pilgrimages in "The Hold Life Has" The
pilgrimage under examination is one related to Catholicism and the Virgin Mary as well. The pilgrimage is focused around an image of Christ on a cross, an image that has
been painted on a rock. Thousands of people make the trek or pilgrimage in order to engage in a feast. In the beginning the people would walk the distance,
however, "In the 1975 pilgrimage, for example, the community of Sonqo (Paucartambo province) made part of the journey by truck as opposed to undertaking the arduous seven-day trek as was
previously the case" (Allen, 1988: 195). It is a very popular pilgrimage that draws people from all over the region, if not the world, due to its inherently Catholic nature.
When the people arrive at the location they begin a walk up a difficult hill. The walk is shadowed, it seems, by a mountain that is seen as a
