example, certain cultures frown on the use of condoms so it is difficult to counsel certain men to protect themselves against AIDS. In general, communication barriers can be devastating. Underwood,
Adler & Pape (2005) report on the case of Lia Lee, a baby born in the 1980s in America to Hmong parents. She suffered from seizures and the doctors presumed
it to be epilepsy but the parents thought it was related to a soul problem (Underwood, Adler & Pape, 2005). Because her parents thought she had a spiritual and not
a medical problem, they only gave her medication occasionally and relied on amulets from Thailand (Underwood, Adler & Pape, 2005). They changed her name to change her luck, but the
doctors kept calling her Lia against her parents wishes (Underwood, Adler & Pape, 2005). Her mother attributes the downturn to the doctors not calling her by the new name (Underwood,
Adler & Pape, 2005). Without proper compliance from parents, Lia had a massive seizure and went into septic shock (Underwood, Adler & Pape, 2005). It plunged her into a persistent
vegetative state and she had lived life in that state for many years (Underwood, Adler & Pape, 2005). This is clearly a case of miscommunication and a failure for doctors
to understand culture. The case of Lia Lee is just one example of a communication problem, but it is also an example of the problems the Hmong who live in
