Spousal violence has a history that stretches back to mankinds earliest chapters on earth. This history is
largely a history of the male sex taking advantage of the weaker physical attributes that typically characterize the female sex. It encompasses physical abuse (inclusive of sexual abuse) emotional
abuse, and economic abuse. We lived in a paternalistic society, a society where men imposed their wishes on women and largely kept them subjugated.
Culture, of course, has a definitive influence in the way that men and women related to one another in these earlier times. Different cultures tolerated differing levels
of spousal violence. Different cultures began to step about from that tolerant view point at differing times in their history. For the purposes of this paper we will
primarily consider the people of Anglo Saxon culture that came to dominate the Americas. As will be illuminated, however, the women of this culture not only learned much from
cultures but had a tremendous influence on cultures all over the world. In the earlier years of our countrys history women were
valued for their beauty and for their domestic roles in the family. They were expected to keep the household functioning efficiently and to satisfy their husband sexually whenever he
