at a time when Native Americans lied in the Santa Monica canyons (Historic Resources Group, 2008). The Spanish government would divide the land there into two portions called Rancho Los Feliz and Rancho La Brea (Historic Resources Group, 2008). It was an agricultural community that by the middle of the nineteenth century would do very well (Historic Resources Group, 2008). During the middle of the 1880s, the state of California would emerge and is aligned with the discovery of gold in the region (Miller & Faux, 1997). President James Polk would provoke a war with Mexico during the time between 1846 and 1848 (Tolson, 2003). It was an idea that was supported with the concept of Manifest Destiny (Tolson, 2003). That war took the California region, in addition to a good part of the southwest, from Mexico (Tolson, 2003). In 1866, a man by the name of H.H. Wilcox purchased some land in Rancho La Brea and his wife dubbed that as Hollywood (Historic Resources Group, 2008). The name stuck. The community would become prosperous but was annexed to Los Angeles in 1910 (Historic Resources Group, 2008). Thus far, Hollywood was an entity unto itself and while the film industry was just a gleam in the eye of motion picture gurus, the industry would later become important to Hollywoods history. It would be in 1911 that Hollywoods first studio would open up (Historic Resources Group, 2008). This was an idea born by the Nestor Company and the studio was situated in an old tavern (Historic Resources Group, 2008).
