made into grenades and bombs. In small quantities, explosives provide the entertainment at 4th of July celebrations. This paper traces the development of explosives through time, describes types of explosives, blasting agents, major explosions, improvements in hazmat response to explosions, and knowing what to do in the event of a blast. Discussion Explosives are substances or devices that produce "a volume of rapidly expanding gas that exerts sudden pressure on its surroundings" (Bellis, 2008). There are two types of explosives commonly used, mechanical and chemical; a third type, nuclear, is available but rarely employed (Bellis, 2008). Nuclear explosions are the result of fission, commonly called "splitting the atom"; chemical explosions result when two or more reactive chemicals come into contact; and mechanical explosions are "physical reactions, for example the effects of compressed air" (Bellis, 2008). Black powder, accompanying inventions and modern explosives: Black powder, also called gunpowder, is a "mixture of saltpeter (potassium nitrate), sulfur, and charcoal (carbon) (Bellis, 2008). Its not known who first invented or used the substance but it is known that it was used in fireworks and for making signals in China as early as the 10th century (Bellis, 2008). Black powder is "the oldest form of a ballistic propellant and it was used with early muzzle-type firearms" (Bellis, 2008). Black powder is a mechanical explosive, and its very messy; it was eventually replaced with "cleaner smokeless powder explosives" (Bellis, 2008) Other accompanying inventions include the safety fuse, invented in 1831 by William Bickford, a leather merchant in England (Bellis, 2008). A safety fuse, according to the dictionary, is a slow-burning fuse that is "used to ignite detonators from a distance" (Safety fuse, 2008). The use of safety fuses made handling black power safer and more practical (Bellis, 2008). Black powder is rarely used ...
